When people refer to "The Beach" in Cabo San Lucas, this is where
they are talking about.
In
our travels though Baja, we
stopped by the Médano Beach on a typical Sunday
off-season afternoon in
Cabo San Lucas. The beach is the strip of well groomed, clean
sand stretching from the harbor entrance north east towards the resorts. Médano Beach is to Cabo what Waikiki is to Honolulu. A place to see, be
seen and to meet.
It
was easy to find an umbrella covered table at the beach level or one in
the covered bar area at 1PM. By 3PM you had to look sharp and move quick
to
find
a table when someone else left. The crowd was mostly young adults, tourists from America,
Europe and Mexico. There were a few families and children as small as
toddlers and the mix was about half, gringos and locals.
The
staff was friendly and the busier it got the more efficient they became.
It's
2 for 1 all day Sunday and two Dos Equis from a bucket of ice went down
quickly. Mr. Big Johnson (seen left) is entertainment all to himself.
Dispensing shots of Tequila in a number of entertaining manors, he
wanders the crowd and provides continual levity. Quite willing to have
his picture taken, alone or with you, ladies who lift their tops can
become permanent members of his "Wedding Album" collection.
Another tip, don't lift his apron.

A
smooth talking MC announces drink specials and hosts a number of
afternoon events. Now these events form an interesting dichotomy. The
young adult crowd really entertained the beach deck with a 7 contestant
"Dirty Dance" contest.
The
afternoon we were there the contestants remained pretty tame and all the
cloths stayed on. In fact, one lovely young lady from France refused to
give up the sun dress. Guests to the Mango Deck should be aware that
some times these contests become a little more heated. The dance contest
was then followed by a game of "Musical Chairs" for the wee
ones. Prizes were cervesa and milk shakes for the appropriate winners.
Beach
chairs are available for customers only right down to the water line and
and a huge number of plastic tables are serviced by a fleet of
waiters.
A small number of more formal tables are available on the bar deck. We
did not sample the food but it appeared to
be standard beach bar fare, ample portions and well presented. Bathrooms
are well appointed and clean Open: 8 am to 11 pm - Located on Médano
Beach, Cabo San Lucas. Phone: (624) 143-0901 / 143-6777
