Summer Surfing in Baja Sur

Surfing is one the best known activities of Baja California and we have many wonderful breaks here in Baja Sur.

Whether you are here in the winter looking for warmer water surf or are here for the classic summer swells that come to Los Cabos during the hurricane season you can just about always find surf.

Here are a few shots of “Old Man’s” at Costa Azul from last week on the first of the month. This is a well known area to surf with breaks at “old Mans”, “the Rock” and “Zippers” all created by the same point.

You can rent boards and get instruction here at Costa Azul and it is conveniently located on the highway in the corridor between Cabo and San Jose del Cabo. (see map).

While LosCabosInsider.com will continue to bring you information on the great surfing we must respect those surfers and the breaks that can only be found by exploring Baja on your own.

In other words we may discuss a surf break without disclosing where it is exactly located. We don’t want to take away from your adventure and more importantly we don’t want to piss off the locals.

Speaking of that, who are the locals? The Mexicans who have lived here forever who have just recently learned to surf? Any Mexican, from any part of the world?  The foreigners who came down here years ago in search of waves?

The person who surfs there the most, in any given time (the season or the year (s))? See what I’m getting at? I have surfed for many years all around the world, beginning in Southern California home of the “locals” attitude. My feeling is that you are a local when you were born on this planet. You may still be a “Barney” (beginner nerd) but basically folks this is your planet enjoy it and to hell with all those that think they own it because they pissed there more, or later than the rest. Leave that to the dogs and go surf.

Insider's Notebook: How to be a Caballero (gentlemen)

Men Cover up at the table
Contrary to what some believe, the Mexicans do not like to look at chest hair when eating. Unless your at a beach bar or restaurant you should cover up the beer belly if you care about offending anyone.

Men walk on the outside
There are still many customs observed by the Mexican culture that if you are interested in knowing the local senoritas you may want to be aware of. When walking on the (paseo) sidewalk the man should walk on the outside towards the street. This doesn’t only protect her but it tells others that she is not available.

Men do open doors
Yes, the senoritas expect you to open the car door and any other door and even lay down your life if necessary.

Men have a dress code
Caballeros where covered shoes at night and shorts on only casual occasions or when it is very hot.
