Victim Assistance in Mexico - Mexico Unido

Contra La Delincuencia

Mexico Unido is a Mexican National, non-profit (AC Association Civil) organization that is to fight for the rights of all those that are victims of crimes. It is an organization that was chartered nationally on November 11th, 1997 to fight for victims rights of serious crimes (crimes grave), educate and assist all peoples (foreigners included) in the legal process, raise the awareness of corruption in the government and currently establish a neighborhood watch. This has become a necessary service as the police and judicial system are over whelmed at times and aren’t capable or in some cases not interested in doing their job.

Mexico Unido or United Mexico is here to help all victims of crimes not only here in Los Cabos or Baja Sur but all of Mexico. Officially founded in 1997 this organization is trying very hard to put light on those subjects of corruption and help those that have been victims of crimes.

Unfortunately, or the reverse depending on how you look at it I was the victim of an attempted mugging in Cabo. No, this does not mean that Cabo San Lucas is now an unsafe place to travel, but it is time for all of us who live or travel in Baja to do something before this becomes the case. Unfortunately, as in any area in the world that is growing as fast as the Los Cabos region in Baja California Sur, these types of crimes begin to happen.

It is no secret that most of Baja Sur and especially the Los Cabos region depend on tourism. Without it none of us would have a job; including “locals” that may only have a small store or are a mechanic in an area that only sells to the “locals”. The “locals” would not have money to spend if it were not for the tourist.

Mexico Unido is also here to help fight the corruption in the legal process to help assure that the criminals are brought to justice. Unfortunately as many of us know there is a fair amount of corruption in the legal process here in Baja Sur, as well as most of Mexico and Mexico Unido is here to put pressure on the judicial process to be sure that these criminals are prosecuted to fullest extent of the law.

This has become a rather important organization in ensuring the safety of all people including locals, foreigner residents and tourist. Unfortunately, due to the local corruption in Baja Sur, there are times when the police and or Ministerio Publico (similar to Public Defenders office in the U.S.A.) just can’t; or don’t want to do their job without being paid a bribe (Mordida) to do the job they are already paid to do.

Los Cabos Representative Sylvia LupianThese growing pains could become the demise of tourism and a secure lifestyle if not kept in check and there is now an organization that is here to help. We are beginning to have the same problems experienced in Hawaii in the 70’s where after the word got out that it was becoming unsafe to not only the residents but travelers as well tourism dropped radically. Hawaii began to see the results of letting the problem go and then began to fight back. It worked and most of Hawaii is not a safe place to travel but live now.

In the Los Cabos area, Sylvia Lupian is the head of the Mexico Unido Los Cabos and she is available, along with her staff, to help any and all of those that have become victims of serious crimes (crimes grave). One of the best programs they are introducing is a Neighborhood watch (vecino vigilante). Encouraging everyone to know their neighbors and to work together in reporting suspicious activities and crimes of all kinds. The more open eyes everyone has on the problem the quicker the problem will cease to exist.

Mexico Unido also has programs going to the schools and educating students of all ages, to help them understand that reporting crimes and suspicious activities such as vandalism, robbery and drug houses is their duty to ensure a safer Mexico for all that live and travel here.

Paying Mordida is as illegal as receiving one. In all fairness one of the major problems here is the police are not paid enough for their job and therefore are easily tempted to break the law themselves to supplement their income.

Here is an organization that is really here to help. They are here to assist you in creating the report (denuncia) for the Ministerio Publico and help you file it as well as follow up on the process. They have their own lawyers and even doctors to help with those that have been accosted. They organize protests, complaints and surveys to show the government the error of their ways.

There are no costs for using their services. They are not affiliated with any specific political party or religion. Mexico Unido receives its income solely from donations. So if you have a business here and benefit greatly from keeping the tourist safe please consider giving back to the community and supporting this organization.

Because the organization is a non-profit you may receive a tax deduction for your contributions. Please help support these people as they are working for all of us in the Baja Sur and need your support.
